Case 40

Surgical Pathology Case

Clinical Information

Approximately 2.5 years later, the patient in Case 39 had a chief complaint of increased pain and swelling of the left knee with difficulty walking, night sweats and a 40-pound weight loss. Image studies with CT, MRI and bone scan did not show any remarkable lesion or metastasis. Clinical examination of the left knee revealed swelling and warmth with some superficial erythema around the previous prosthesis.  Therefore, a sepsis was suspected. The patient then underwent irrigation and debridement of the left knee prosthesis.
