| CLINICAL INFORMATION | ||
| 71 year-old male. Esophageal mass. Subtotal esophagectomy and partial proximal gastrectomy | ||
| GROSS DESCRIPTION | ||
| The specimen consists of a portion of esophagus and a partial proximal stomach. One centrally necrotic tumor mass measuring 2.5 x 1.5 cm is located at the gastroesophageal junction. The mass is 7.0 cm from the esophageal surgical margin and 6.0 cm from the gastric surgical margin. Sectioning through necrotic tumor mass reveals that the tumor penetrates through the muscularis into periesophageal adipose tissue (deep surgical margin). One mucosal lesion measures 2 x 1cm and is located in the mid-portion of the esophagus. In addition, several firm nodules measuring 5.0 x 4.0 x 3.0 cm in aggregate are present in the perigastric adipose tissue. Grossly, these nodules are well-separated from the gastric wall. Sectioning through these nodules reveal hemorrhage and necrosis. Multiple necrotic nodules are also noted on the cut surface, measuring up to 2.5 cm in greatest dimensions. | ||
