CLINICAL INFORMATION

  64-year-old male, laryngeal mass.

GROSS DESCRIPTION

 

The total laryngopharyngectomy measures 7.5 x 7.0 x 6.5 cm with an attached hyoid bone.There is a nearly circumferential exophyic red/tan friable tumor measuring 7.5 X 6.0 X 3.5 cm located within the right superior hypopharynx that extends to within 1.0 cm from the superior right mucosal margin, 0.5 cm from the inferior margin and within 2 mm from the right lateral deep soft tissue margin.  The tumor encroaches up to1.0 cm to the right aryepiglottic fold. The tumor abuts the cricoid cartilage posteriorly but does not grossly invade it. The tumor does not extend distally into the esophagus proper; it is located entirely superior to the lower border of the cricoid cartilage. The tumor does not involve the larynx proper.  The epiglottis, right and left true and false vocal cords are grossly unremarkable.
