Measles pneumonia

  • Caused by the measles virus, rubeola

  • Can cause necrotizing bronchiolitis and  giant cell interstitial pneumonitis

  • Giant cells: 

    • Large, 100 μm in diameter

    • Multinucleated, up to 60 nuclei

    • Nuclear inclusions: homogeneous, eosinophilic, and surrounded by an indistinct clear halo

    • Cytoplasmic inclusions: deeply eosinophilic, granular, and variable in sizes
